Located in the Mentawais, West Sumatra, Indonesia, Telescopes is the ultimate left hand reef break that offers up barreling sections, racy walls, or rippable shoulders depending on the wave and the conditions. The waves here can get heavy at size and break for up to 200 meters over a coral reef. This isn’t the fastest or most critical reef in the area, making it a crowd favorite. This is one of those waves that you’ll be mindsurfing for years after coming here.
What are the best surf conditions for Telescopes?
Gets good between chest high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. The wave gets more perfect with more size. Intermediates will be able to handle it up to a bit overhead, but then its best left to the more advanced crew. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will usually have a crew on it (6/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Southwest and West. Works on all tides, but low to mid is best.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures range from 29 to 25 year round. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
