Located in the Southern Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, Rag’s Left is a quality left hand reef break that offers up super long barreling sections when the conditions line up. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 250 meters over a coral reef. The earthquake made this break a little worse than it was, now perfection and closeouts are intertwined needing an expert eye to discern the two.
What are the best surf conditions for Rag’s Left?
Gets good between head high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then step up as the size increases. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (5/10) and will get busy at times (5/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the Southwest. Works on a mid to high tide best.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures fluctuate between 29 and 25. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
