Not sure I would call any waves around here Beginners Waves but Pitstops would have to be one of the more mellow breaks in the area. A fairly casual right-hander that is a favourite with longboarders. Plan to cut your teeth here before charging some of the more challenging waves in the area. Like all of the spots around here, boat access is a popular way to gain access however there is an ever-growing number of camps providing access via land.
The lowdown on surfing at Pitstops
Located in Northern Mentawai Islands, Mentawais, Pitstops reef break has waves breaking over a coral bottom. Most waves are pretty easy to surf and can run for up to 50 meters, presenting fun sections for manoeuvres!
What are the Pitstops’s best surf conditions?
The best wave size is between waist high to double overhead. We recommend riding your longboard or standard shortboard here. Pitstops in Northern Mentawai Islands is best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers It’s not that consistent (4/10) and is hardly ever crowded (3/10). The best winds for Pitstops are East. The best swell direction is from the Southwest.
To surf here in summer you’ll mostly be wearing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in strong winds, the warmest water temperature a balmy 29 degrees in April. In winter we recommend bringing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in strong winds with the coldest temperature in August being a warm 25 degrees!
