Sometimes referred to as the “Mentawai Pipeline,” Hideaways is a ledgy lefthand reef break. On the right day, that comparison is almost fair to make, though it very rarely reaches a stoutness or size similar to that you’d see during a classic day at Pipeline. Hideaways is at its best in the 4-8ft range with no wind. You’ll want to surf it on a medium or high tide, as the wave often exposes dry reef when it gets too low. If you’re new to surfing, it’d probably be best to avoid this wave — intermediate and advanced surfers, however, will love it. When its not busy trying to impersonate Pipeline, Hideaways offers a nice wall to carve away at.
