In total there are 7 righthand point breaks that form the infamous Scorpion Bay or otherwise known as Bahia San Juanico which can link up depending on swell. Yep, that’s right you can ride a wave here for 2km on the right day! The best swell for this outstanding point break is South to West for it to get in the bay. You can find more protection from the afternoon onshores at the first three points, the trade-off here though is the size with Punta Pequena being more exposed to swell and therefore bigger. As a general rule of the thumb the points furthest inside are more mellow and more suited to beginners with the furthest point being bigger, more powerful and better suited to more competent surfers.
Can be shallow when small, go careful putting your feet down as there are urchins and crowds can be a factor here due to the quality of the wave. On land you’ll need to negotiate moody expats, expensive camping, no facilities and a grueling 14-hour drive (4×4 advised) from the USA, oh and of course Scorpions!
Where there’s risk there’s reward!
