Located on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Portsea is an average beach break over a sandy bottom. The waves here are not too challenging to surf, the strong rip currents are the biggest hazard here. On its day, the waves break up to 100 meters providing great sections for turns and even the odd barrel.
What are the best surf conditions for Portsea?
Gets good between chest-high to double overhead. We recommend a longboard, shortboard, or step up when bigger. Portsea is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) but can get busy on weekends and holidays (5/10). Even though there is usually a wave, it isn’t often good due to the lack of formed sandbanks. The best winds are Northeast, it works best on medium to high tides, and the best swell direction is from the Southwest.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in summer with the warmest water temperature a brisk 16 degrees in February. In winter we recommend a 4/3 wetsuit with temps dropping to around 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
