Located on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Lorne Point is an excellent rocky reef/point set up that can serve up some of the best and longest waves on the coast. The waves here are no joke in terms of power and difficulty, but on its day Lorne Point can serve up long walls for any manoeuvre that you can think of, as well as sections that offer opportunities for barrels. The wave is usually sectiony, but on a big swell on the right day the whole point will line up and deliver some amazing waves.
What are the best surf conditions for Lorne Point?
Gets good when its bigger, head high to double overhead. We recommend riding your longboard, standard shortboard, and step up when bigger here. Lorne Point is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, the rocky bottom and steep sections being the limiting factor. The surf here is usually has a wave, but doesn’t get really good often (5/10). When the wave is working it will be crowded and the competition will be fierce (9/10). The best winds for Lorne Point are Northwest. The best swell is large and from the South.The lower the tide the better here.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in summer with the warmest water temperature a brisk 16 degrees in February. In winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit with temps being a brisk 12 degrees! See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
