Found in the Cactus Beach area in South Australia, Supertubes (named after its South African counterpart) is an excellent right reef break that detonates over a shallow rock shelf. The waves here can be pretty gnarly and break for up to 100 meters offering up barrels for anyone who can pull into them and keep up.
What are the best surf conditions for Supertubes (Cactus)?
Gets good here between waist-high to triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard, shortboard, step up, or gun when large here. Basically, anything that can make the drop and get you down the line. Supertubes is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, even though it is the least intimidating wave in the area. It breaks semi consistently (5/10) but will get busy when it is really good (5/10), especially at the low tide mark that tightens the lineup up. The best winds are offshore from the Northeast, it works on low tides, and the best swell direction is South, Southwest, and West.
We recommend a 3/2 in the summer with temps rising up to 21 degrees in February. The winter brings water temperatures of around 16 degrees, so we recommend a 4/3 depending on cold tolerance. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
